Fortunately for American and British war planners, the USDA had developed and tested mYL, a pyrethrum containing lousing powder, in Florida back in 1942. the next year, the typhus Commission set up by the Surgeon General demonstrated the effectiveness of the powder in trials carried out in egypt. the Rockefeller Foundation’s health commission then initiated the critically important program of delousing Naples in December of 1943. Spraying 400 lbs. of DDt by air and delivering 500,000 2 oz. tins of mYL, the United States was largely able to bring an end to the epidemic by may of 1944, having suffered only negligible casualties.
